What’s up you sexy, and you don’t care what they say
See everytime you turn around you saying my name
What’s up you sexy and you don’t care what they say
See everytime you turn around you screaming my name
(Dark Child)
Now I got a confession (haha, ha, ha ha)
When I was young I wanted attention(haha, ha, ha ha)
and I promised myself that I’d do anything (haha, ha, ha ha)
anything to get men to notice me (haha, ha, ha ha)
But I ain’t complaining
We all wanna be famous
So go ahead and say what you wanna say
You know what it’s like to be nameless
Want then to know what your name is
Cause see when I was younger I would say
When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies
When I grow up, Be on TV , people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, fresh and clean, number one chick, when I step out on the seen
But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it
But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it
They used to tell me I was silly,
until I popped up on the TV (lala la, la la)
I always wanted to be a superstar,
who knew that singing songs would get me this far (lala la, la la)
But I ain’t complaining
We all wanna be famous
So go ahead and say what you wanna say
You know what it’s like to be nameless
Want then to know what your name is
Cause see when I was younger I would say
When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies
When I grow up, Be on TV , people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, fresh and clean, number one chick, when I step out on the seen
But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it
But be careful what you wish for cause
you just might get it
you just might get it
you just might get it
I see you staring at me , ooo I’m a trend setter, yes this is true
cause what I do no one can do it better
You can talk about me cause I’m a hot topic
I see you watchin’ me watchin’ me
and I know you want it
When I grow up I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up I wanna see the world, drive nice cars, I wanna have boobies
When I grow up, Be on TV , people know me, be on magazines
When I grow up, fresh and clean, number one chick, when I step out on the seen

UPDATE: the Malaysian government finally allowed Avril Lavigne’s concert to go on after all… finally, some sense in the government… (but some PAS members are still protesting……)
_________
The article attached below states that the government denied granting a permit for this concert because of PAS Youth’s Opposition to this party…… If this premise is true, I have one question to ask the Government: why would you give in to what PAS Youth said? Is the BN-led government trying to appease PAS supporters? The only sense I can make of here is that amongst the ranks of BN itself, there has been opposition for Avril Lavigne’s concert. Or…. they’re actually trying to appease PAS….. politics (from both sides)…. its really making this country really annoying to live in…..
Another hilarious statement….”It is not timely. It’s not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for,” said an official from the Ministry. What are we preparing for? To close our minds after 51 years of independence? Shouldn’t we be more open minded and accepting to other cultures? 51 years of independence haven’t thought us that? Yeah yeah…. Asian values aren’t compatible with Western values? I am a supporter of Asian values, yes, we do have somewhat different values from the West, but let’s be more open minded and see concerts view concerts such as this as mere entertainment…. not a hypnotic event that can change our values totally. From this statement.. the only rationale of “contrary to what we are preparing for” is probably because we’re allowing a foreign concert to be held in our country… since MERDEKA is about celebrating our independence from a foreign power.
And when will the government and members of PAS specifically realize that even if you disallow Avril or any other “sexy”celebrities or “corrupting” entertainers to step on our soil physically, they have arrived in Malaysia through cyberspace and on air. Why don’t you ban MTV and stop internet access all together?
Of all the countries in the world, Malaysia should be the one that should know how to be accepting to others as Malaysia is always boasting that it is proud of its multiculturalism. Multiculturalism should not longer be seen as different races or religions, but should also be perceived as different walks of life, different backgrounds, and also different ways of thinking and we should all value these difference, no matter how different they are. C’mon, let’s prove to the world that our country values the spirit of multiculturalism and lets proof that this country is indeed one of the more liberal Islamic countries.
p/s: I actually nearly bought the ticket for the concert if I didn’t have to go to Pahang on that date….

Malaysia cancels ‘too sexy’ Avril Lavigne concert
By JULIA ZAPPEI, Associated Press Writer Tue Aug 19, 7:50 AM ET
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysia on Tuesday canceled a concert by Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne, saying it may taint the Muslim-majority country’s independence day celebrations after the Islamic opposition slammed her show as being “too sexy.”
The Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry said it had decided not to permit Lavigne’s show because it was unsuitable to Malaysian culture and could not be held on Aug. 29, two days ahead of independence day.
“It is not timely. It’s not in the good spirit of our National Day. If we go ahead with the concert, it is contrary to what we are preparing for,” said Shukran Ibrahim, a senior official from the culture ministry’s department that vets all foreign artists.
The decision came after the youth wing of a fundamentalist opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, called for the show’s cancellation.
Kamarulzaman Mohamed, a party youth official, told The Associated Press on Monday that Lavigne’s show was “considered too sexy for us” and would promote the wrong values just before independence day.
“We don’t want our people, our teenagers, influenced by their performance. We want clean artists, artists that are good role models,” he said.
Lavigne, who became famous with her 2002 debut album “Let’s Go,” had planned to launch her monthlong Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur.
The show’s promoter, Galaxy Group, can request a new date for the concert, which will be considered by the ministry, Shukran said. Galaxy officials couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.
Galaxy began advertising the Grammy-nominated rock singer’s concert this month even though it had yet to obtain a government permit, which is mandatory for all foreign music shows. It said Monday about half the concert tickets had been sold.
Last year, R&B singer Beyonce moved her show from Malaysia to Indonesia, and Christina Aguilera skipped the country on an Asian tour after a controversy erupted over a dress code for foreign artists.
Malaysia requires all performers to wear clothes without obscene or drug-related images and be covered from the chest to the knees. They must also refrain from jumping, shouting, hugging and kissing on stage.
Still, members of PAS and other conservative Muslims often protest against Western and even Malaysian music shows that they deem to be inappropriate.
The local organizer of a Pussycat Dolls concert in 2006 was fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,857) after the U.S. girl group was accused of flouting decency regulations.

I guess a 5 day trip to a country I’ve never visited would not be given due space in just one post… so, I’m going to try to keep my posts short but in a few different parts….
Part I - Introducing… HONG KONG!!!!
This wasn’t really my first time touching down on Hong Kong territory - I had a flight transfer once at Chap Lak Kok Airport - but nevertheless, this was my first real trip travelling around Hong Kong and also Macau (more about that in later posts).
Upon landing at Hong Kong International Airport (which is actually located on Lantau Island, about 45 minutes away by bus from Hong Kong Island itself), I was greeted by Sean, who then brought me around Hong Kong and Macau for the next 4 days. The first adventure was the bus ride from the airport to the city centre - saw the state of the art bridge that connects Lantau Island and the main islands… it was indeed a beautiful sight. Just that the sky was a little hazy (Sean blamed it on China… i can’t really disagree there)
The next sight was the ports and docks of Hong Kong - the key to Hong Kong’s success, development, and prosperity until today. It was really a long strectch of containers, and that whatever its called machinery to load and unload the ships that dock there.
Then we arrived on Hong Kong Island itself…. the tall buildings that were so close to each other was exactly what I pictured Hong Kong to be like. Rows and rows of tall buildings - commerical and residential and the large signs that portrude out above the roads.
And then it was meal time!!! Ok… it wasn’t exactly meal time.. I landed at 1PM and we only got the restaurant at 3PM… but they were still serving dim sum…. my two favorite was the har gou and the dim sum…. YUMMM….. and they also had the chee cheong fun… yeah… Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun… with Yau Cha Kuey inside… that was interesting….. but a little bland… but.. the dim sum was much better than the dim sum here in Malaysia….. oooooh… but the bill came up to….. a lot….. seriously…. and it was juz two of us eating….
Then, after that we walked a bit around the city…. and saw a “Park” which was all concrete… great huh…. and then headed for the hotel by the underground train service or the MTR (They do have some tracks above ground too but thats towards the outskirts). So, North Point (in Cantonese, its Bak Gok or something.. mind my spelling and even pronunciation) station was our destination and then juz a few doors away from the Java Street Exit was the hotel… EXCELLENT!!!!! The Ibis North Point Hotel was great for the value, given the price of land in HK (1 Million HKD won’t even buy u a flat.. its ridiculous). Hotel had just basic amenities but was really clean and comfortable (but I was actually staying alone, so it was really nice… 2 adults in the room would be cutting it quite close given the space)
Then we headed off to Kowloon, across the Hong Kong Bay to check out the view of Hong Kong Island. The skyline of Hong Kong is amazing (we did check out some of the buildings in Admiralty (on HK island) before crossing the tunnel to Kowloon. There was a building whose facade was inspired by “Panda’s on a Tree”. Other buildings were just as interesting, the HSBC building for example was constructed to be able to deconstruct conveniently (due to the apprehension that after HK’s handover to China, things will turn bad, HSBC was ready to take their building away from Hong Kong soil).
After that, we took the MTR to Mong Kok. Met another friend of mine, a Belgian Hong Kong-er, and went for dinner and dessert in Langham Place - Wan Tan Mee and then some Tong Sui. They had a really long escalator…. and also a model of the Olympic venues made with just playing cards!
Next - Lui Yan Kai (Ladies Market)… haggled a bit and got some souvenirs… although i’m generally bad at haggling… i get too embarassed.
Finally, ending my 1st night in HK hanging out along the Bay at Tsim Sa Tsui (its a real toung twister to pronouce it). Enjoyed the breeze and took some nice pictures….. and also walked along the AVenue of Stars (similar to the one in Hollywood)…. however, I only recognized maybe 2% of the stars… HAHAHHAHAH
Overall.. it was a great day in Hong Kong… had a quick introduction to Hong Kong by train, by bus, and by tram. Only complain… it’s really hot and humid during the summer in Hong Kong… just couldn’t wait to get back to my hotel room to take a shower….

Its been quite a while since I blogged… anyway, i’m actually feeling bored today… hahaha.. wanted to take this week off…. from writing papers etc… althouhg I still have my classes at NIUC (its their last week of classes…. and I’m making them come even during revision week…. hehehe…. but anyway, their final exam is only 40%, and they get tips for their exams this week… if they come to class)
But yeah, this semester, classes in NIUC has been quite good. Honestly speaking, I have one really good class… and one not so good class…. good as in hardworking, attentive, and determined to do well (not to say everybody in the other class is terrible, there are a few good students) . So, its been partially satisfying. Tomorrow gonna belanja them pizza… But, its not me who should be the one complaining, the students themselves should realize.. .they’re already in college… they should be making use of this second-chance to do well. Its their loss anyway, not mine….
Ok.. enough about my ramblings about my class….
Besides that I just finished writing a paper for a presentation for the ICHE-UKM Conference that will be held next August. So, thats why i’m taking this week off. Next week, I should probably get a start on my thesis if I actually want to finish it up this semester….. before………
Hahhaa….. before what???… thats the question right now…… its either Europe or Malaysia. On one hand, I got accepted into a masters program in Europe (1st year in the University of Vienna and the 2nd year in LSE). Yeah, it sounds really fun… thats why I wanna go…but the problem is the finances (Vienna’s fine… but London is just so expensive…. 11000 Pounds for a year…. thats only tuition… ARGH…..) On the other hand, I’m waiting for the results of an interview with for a goverment position. Yeah, its the position that I’ve been blogging about for a few times now) If i get offered a position in the Foreign Service, I might stay in Malaysia. But, is it really a good time to get a job with the bureaucracy in this uncertain times in Malaysia?
So….. really…. yeah… thats the decision I have to make….. Hopefully I can make a decision soon….. the masters program begins early October anyway.
So long for now! Tchuss! (I’m learning German online too btw, just simple basic German.. .hehehe)

So, here I am blogging from my dorm room on the first night of the Assessment for PTD at IKWAS (Institute Tadbiran Awam Negara, Kampus Wilayah Selatan), Kluang, Johor. Its a 3 day 2 night program. And the rules they have here is…. errr.. to put it in a polite way… a little eccentric….. Hahhahha… even to eat at the dining hall, one has to wear proper clothing - a collared t-shirt and long pants at least. There goes my chance of wearing shorts….. So, the whole day, I’ve been wearing my dress shirt and black pants… and a tie. And even that, my roomate said someone told me that a striped shirt is not allowed…
oh, and the most ridiculous attire requirement is the huge… i mean HUGE number that we have to wear at all times (even when going to the bathroom it seems… but once i get in my room, that ugly thing is off)…. and… we had to take a picture with that number… like a suspect in prison… ridiculous!!!
But besides that, things seem pretty interesting except that I’m super tired after the last few days working in the Paralympics…. (no, I wasn’t playing) That was quite interesting… but back to the program here in Kluang, we just heard a presentation about the process, procedures, and prospects for working with the government as a Pegawai Tadbir dan Diplomatik (Administrative and Diplomatic Officer - direct translation). In about 45 minutes, the first two activities will begin, i guess it will be a discussion.
Tomorrow, 7am - 2.4 km run and other physical exercises. Then, in the afternoon, public speaking in Malay - my topic is on Service Delivery….. just realized what exactly it is just now after a preliminary research. And, my English Public Speaking topic is Health….. what the heck am i going to talk about??? that will be on Sunday.
But, I guess I’ll blog more about this when this program is over…. its been hard to find time lately, at the moment, i’m just too lazy to research on “Penyampaian Perkhidmatan”. And, next week’s MASUM, so another busy week. And then probably will start teaching again….
Guess thats about it for now….. till next time… peace out!

1) Its been a real busy week…. or 2 weeks actually… and 1 more week to go… then I should be free… as theres no more exams, i’ll be done with interviews/assessments (interview for JAL scholarship - did not get it; assessment for PTD - next weekend), and done working with the Malaysian Paralympics (thats only beginning next week though).
2) Oh yeah… but MASUM’s about to start next two weeks too…. and then theres the bowling comp UKM is organizing right after that…..
3) So, 3 more weeks to be really free……
4) But maybe I’ll be starting work again at Nilai… maybe.. maybe not…
5) And, on the political scene, parliament started…. interesting times….. biased Speaker… probably…. rowdy MP’s… probably too….. we do have to give credit to Pak Lah for staying cool and soft-spoken… and also for being pragmatic especially when the Speaker didn’t allow supplementary questions but Pak Lah said give other MP’s chance for supp. questions….
6) And, for those who believe that the Pakatan Rakyat is for equality and against what many has claimed to be Ketuanan Melayu…. check out what Abdul Hadi Awang said at http://www.harakahdaily.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14185&Itemid=85 Maybe only DAP is against this thing called “Ketuanan Melayu” or maybe its only their supporters…… uninformed supporters??? maybe….
I guess this is short enough… Till next time!
Oh yeah.. i more thing i forgot to say… i’m desperately in need of a cold shower…… (no… its not what u dirty minds are thinking)….. its just too hot….. and i’m all sticky and sweaty after a jog (yeah.. i can’t believe i managed to jog two evenings in a row… wahhaha)

Sensational??? The US Constitution fell down……. literally…
Its actually the replica of the US Constitution that I mounted on the wall that fell… its not even the real thing….
Anyway, talking bout the US… its also a really interesting time to observe whats happening in the US at the moment. Yeah, I guess enough of Malaysian politics for the moment. No doubt the newspapers nowadays are really exciting (both mainstream and online). But, lets rest and travel across the Pacific to US and check out whats happening there at the moment. In brief, two things are really exciting there…. No no… not American Idol Gives Back (although I was watching this program a few hours ago.. its not too bad… and I did help but purchasing a song on iTunes.. the one by Daughtry… good song… anyway… thats not the issue here)….
The two things:
1) Its economy
2) The Democratic Party race to the Convention and the Presidential Elections
The economy…. the Federal Reserve already cut the overnight interest rate a few times. When I was taking the Money, Banking, and Monetary Policy class last year (ECO150, Marquette University, Spring 2007)… I still remember…. we had an assignment to predict what the Fed was going to do that term, and we predicted it to not change… and not change it did. But, just a few terms after, everything seem to have changed. I wonder whether the people taking the Money, Banking, and Monetary Policy class this semester with Dr. Nourzad predicted it correctly… hold on.. is Dr. Nourzad still teaching this class this semester…. okok… anyway, yeah.. the US economy is really something to watch not only for its effects to the domestic US economy but also the ripple it would cause to the world economy. We cannot deny that the US is an important economy for the rest of the world. For Malaysia, for sure, because its one of our most important trading partner. If they can’t buy our goods, there goes one of our biggest market. And, the economic problems faced by the US now might also be because of Bush… spending so much on military…. not doing much for its economy… thinking that if Iraq is controlled.. they control the oil… and with the oil… they can do anything they want… but its not proving to be so….
And the coming elections… it actually ties up….. the democratic race is really still simmering… will Obama win.. will Clinton hold on….. lets wait and see.. .and then… if either one of those “minority” win…. can they challenge McCain who had a strong mandate from the republicans (to put it in Malaysian political terms). Will the economy affect the choice of Americans to be their next president? If yes, I think the recession would favor the democrats as they’re more prone towards protecting domestic middle-class interest who are sufferign the most now.
Ok…. someone said that brevity is good. So, I know I wasn’t that brief… but to avoid any more rantings…. signing off now! till next time!

Wow……
The results of the 12th General Elections in Malaysia has been out for a few hours already but the reality of it has sank in with the fall of a few key seats announced earlier yesterday. The fall of Lembah Pantai really said it all. And then the fall of Nilai (the DUN where I’m residing in). I seriously thought Nilai was a safe seat of BN but I guess the “silent” voters all around Malaysia did not make themselves heard before this huh?
This is the reality of a democracy. The results actually show that democracy is actually healthy in Malaysia. As the editor of NST has said in its publication today, opposition leaders have to apologize to SPR (although the SPR chief actually looked really sad and annoyed when he announced the results). It still shows that democracy is being practiced fairly in Malaysia.
The Parliament results…. less 1 seat in Sarawak - 131 BN vs 82 Opposition (BR) No more 2/3 majority for the BN. Bye bye hopes of simply amending the constitution and acting as a solid and disciplined group.
Yeah, its crazy…. for the first time in history, no more 2/3 majority for BN, 5 states fell into opposition hands and BN only won 1 seat in WP Kuala Lumpur. I guess its really a turning point in Malaysian history. But, lets see how the coalition of DAP-PKR-PAS can survive in states like Perak and Selangor where a multi-party coalition would be needed to set up the state government. One thing that came to my attention to be kinda weird is that DAP-PKR-PAS is giving the Menteri Besar position to PAS which has the least seats amongst all of them (bernama.com.my). This is all going to be new…. a new system in Malaysia…. something that never happened before. Can’t predict anything…. but its gonna be really interesting!
Will this arrangement evolve into a two-party system like the Democrats and Republicans in the US (as Lim Guan Eng said just a few hours ago) or will this arrangement fall out after a while. In other countries, a loose coalition to form a government usually falls out and then a fresh elections have to be called. Will this happen? Can DAP-PKR-PAS really co-operate? Will anybody from DAP-PKR-PAS change sides to BN in Perak? BN can only hope…. they need 2 to change sides to tip the balance and attain the simple majority. On more practical issues, will oil price go down? Will tolls be abolished? Will the price of other essential goods go down?
Nevertheless, congratulations to the opposition - you managed to deny BN the 2/3 majority in parliament like you and your supporters have wanted - now you can poke the federal government all you want. And, congratulations for taking 5 states away from the BN. The people’s vote shows that the majority hope that you can do a better job in creating a Malaysia that continues to develop and ensure better standards of living for its citizens compared to BN. So, please prove that you can do a better job in the states that you’ve managed to control and please prove that your bigger presence in the parliament will create a better Malaysia for all. And, to BN reps, please continue to serve the people to the best of your abilities.
So, its a political tsunami indeed. Hopefully this tsunami would not cause serious casualties (besides all the political casualties that hit BN candidates). I’m just hoping for the best!!! Hopefully peace and stability will prevail in Malaysia and development will continue or improved for the benefit of all Malaysians!!! Lets build a Malaysia for all Malaysians regardless of ethnicity, religion, socio-economic class, and gender.
